Warner smijt met geld

De laatste game van Batman was er eindelijk eentje zoals het hoorde: de game was duister, bruut en afwisselend. Batman: Arkham Asylum verraste dan ook vriend en vijand bij de release. Zelf was ik niet bepaald onder de indruk van de demo, maar sinds de volledige game ben ik Batman-fan. Ik was dus ook aardig in mijn nopjes toen vorig jaar de trailer van een vervolg verscheen. Helaas is dat het enige wat we voorgeschoteld kregen, we hebben zelfs niet eens een officiële titel. Maar op het internet werd er al druk gespeculeerd over de inhoud van de game. Let op: de rest van dit bericht gaat spoilers bevatten!

Volgens de geruchten heeft The Joker van heel Gotham City een gekkenhuis gemaakt. Het speelgebied van het tweede deel zal dus een stuk groter worden dan Arkham Asylum. Misschien dat de Batmobile een grotere rol gaat spelen hierin, we weten het niet. Wel hopen we dat de stad ook verschillende gedaanteveranderingen ondergaat tijdens het spel, wat een geweldige toevoeging was in het eerste deel. Met een beperkt gebied bleef de game afwisselend. Petje af, Rocksteady!

Natuurlijk zul je weer verschillende aartsvijanden van Batman op je pad tegenkomen. Onze held gaat het onder andere opnemen tegen The Penguin, Harvey Dent (oftewel Two-Face), Black Mask en Catwoman. Of gaat deze laatste hem juist bijstaan in zijn strijd tegen het kwaad? Zo niet, dan krijgt Batman nog een zware taak. In de tijd waarin Arkham Asylum zich afspeelde, is zijn trouwe maatje Robin namelijk al dood. The Joker ziet er weer wonderbaarlijk goed uit voor wat hem is overkomen in het eerste deel en uiteraard vergeten we Killer Croc niet, die Arkham Asylum overleefde. Mét een vat Titan in zijn hand. Ik ben benieuwd hoe dat er uit gaat zien.

Ik zie een goede toekomst voor onze gevleugelde vriend. Warner is ten slotte als een moeder voor Batman. Deze game zal niet afgeraffeld worden, dat is één ding dat zeker is. In tegenstelling tot de releasedate. Die was eigenlijk in oktober gepland, maar volgens de laatste berichten klopt daar helemaal niets van. We wachten het af. Op het moment dat we meer informatie hebben, laten we het je uiteraard weten.

Met de zak geld heeft Warner overigens niet alleen de rechten van Batman gekocht, maar ook (zoals je al in de intro kon lezen) Mortal Kombat. Wat we hiervan moeten verwachten, weet ik niet. Vroeger was de serie goud waard. Mortal Kombat 3 is niet meer uit mijn geheugen te wissen. Deze game heb ik letterlijk kapot gespeeld. Toch jammer, want als ik het me goed herinner heb ik er toen 160 gulden voor betaald. Helaas werd elke opvolger zijn geld steeds minder waard. Ik vraag me af of er nog toekomst is voor deze franchise.

Home Entertainment Group. “This arrangement is a great strategic fit and we are very pleased to solidify our relationship with this talented development team.”

Founded in 2004 in London, England, Rocksteady specializes in developing action-adventure video games, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2009. The title has enjoyed robust sales, shipping over three million units worldwide, and has garnered numerous industry awards.

“We are proud to strengthen our association with WBIE, a world class publisher that we have enjoyed working with since we began developing Batman: Arkham Asylum,” said Jamie Walker, studio director, Rocksteady Studios. Warner Bros. continues to grow its games business through key acquisitions, building internal development capabilities, leveraging its global video distribution infrastructure, and focusing on developing major games franchises such as Batman, Mortal Kombat, The Lord of the Rings and LEGO.

In 2007, Warner Bros. acquired TT Games, developer of the hit LEGO-based game franchises, including LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Batman, which have wide appeal with players of all ages. In early 2009, Warner Bros. acquired Snowblind Studios to develop its The Lord of the Rings games franchise, with the first title expected to be released in 2011. Most recently, Warner Bros. purchased the primary assets of Midway Games. Midway published the Mortal Kombat franchise, which has sold over 26 million units worldwide, and owned a robust IP catalog and broadly applicable game engine technology.
